More good news for existing Comcast and Time Warner Cable subscribers. Along with content from TBS, TNT, and Starz, you’ll soon be able to view shows and movies from HBO and Cinemax online through the companies’ new joint venture – TV Everywhere.TV Everywhere was announced last month, with a very limited trial set to start in a few weeks. The basic idea is to give subscribers more value by letting them enjoy programming both on their TV and on the Web, whenever and wherever they want it. Now, streaming versions of shows like Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm as well as movies like The Dark Knight will be included as part of the yet-to-be-launched website.
While offering on-demand programming to existing subscribers certainly makes sense and adds value, as we wrote last month, more options for access would be better, and more profitable. There’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to purchase a season pass to Entourage or a single viewing of The Dark Knight over the Web through TV Everywhere … other than a lot of red tape and a continued avoidance of innovative business models by the media and cable companies that own and distribute the content.
